Join flower farmer and florist Georgie Newbery as she takes you through her dahlia growing and harvesting year. A member of the RHS Dahlia Trials Committee, Georgie is a keen dahlia enthusiast as well as an expert grower.
We have a beautiful dahlia patch here at Common Farm, and dahlias are the big show offs in our bouquets from the end of July right up until November and September, when we hold this workshop, is when the dahlias really show off!
Dahlias are enormously popular as both gorgeous border plants and cut flowers. Georgie has spent years refining her dahlia growing systems so that she can produce a spectacular crop without onerous amounts of work.
In this workshop, we will spend time out on the dahlia patch, looking at the varieties we grow. Georgie will talk about the steps she takes each year to ensure her dahlias give her exactly the wow factor she needs as a flower farmer, from high summer to the first frosts. A keen rationaliser of works, Georgie's system will not take too much of your time but will give you flowers the envy of your neighbours.
This workshop is ideal for both the hobby grower and flower farmer and includes information on why or not you might lift your dahlias, the different ways you can store, how to mulch, various whys and wherefores of dahlia propagation, growing on, planting out, feeding, watering and harvest. Georgie finishes with top tips for conditioning and arranging your dahlias for wow factor and good vase life.
Come and spend time with Georgie not just admiring the dahlias, but being inspired to make more of your own dahlia enthusiasm.
This is a half day workshop (10am - 1pm) and there will be a maximum of 10 people attending each session. The workshop takes place at Common Farm, BA9 8HN. If you can't get to us in Somerset, we run the same workshop online. Find out more here.
Workshops at Common Farm Flowers take place in our studio barn, as well as out on the farm (where there is no cover!) Please wear clothes suitable for the weather (layers, waterproof clothes) and bring shoes / boots that are designed to walk on rough grassy paths. Even on a sunny day, flip flops and sandals aren't advised and we suggest long trousers where possible, due to the risk of ticks. A sun hat and sun protection are also advised, as we can't always stand in the shade.
Please bring your own drinks and snacks along to the workshop if needed.
