August news from the farm

August news from the farm
Well hello how are we all?  Hot?  Here too!  In a good way.  I mean we’ve had no warm weather to speak of this summer so far so I am enjoying these hot end of July days, sitting in the shade as though I’m an old hand at this kind of thing, keeping a good straw hat to hand (it’s promising 30 degrees when I visit the dahlia trials with the committee at Wisley on 31st July) and drinking long pints of cold water with whole lemons squirted in as though I were in Ischia or somewhere really summer holidayish.

Here at the flower farm we slow down a bit during the summer holidays: still masses of flowers going out, but no workshops until the autumn when we start again with lots of interesting sessions to keep us all busy until Christmas.

I tick the weddings and events off the list as we go, and still have more to look forward to.  My kids’ first baby-sitter is getting married at the end of August this year and I can’t wait to do her flowers.  And my eldest godson is coming to visit this weekend with his fiancé as they plan their flowers for next year.  I’m glad he told me the wedding will be in early August 2025 as we are already sold out for June.  If you’re planning flowers from us for a wedding or event in 2025 do get in touch in plenty of time as I am ruthless in selling out in advance if I can.
Meanwhile I’m just waiting for this hot spell to pass and we’ll clear the other end of the poly tunnel and mulch ready for planting next season’s biennials which are fattening up nicely in the shade of the new studio’s sitooterie.

It’s that weather, that time of year, that holding breath moment, that hiatus between the mad rush of the spring and early summer and September which is always the busiest month of our year.  There’s a change of pace: still harvesting hard two days a week, but a fortnightly trip to Wisley punctuating the time, and opportunistically catching up with some of my mentees as I drive up and down and around the country.  Less planting, more harvest.  Beginning to consider 2025… Which reminds me… I must get that bulb order in for spring flowers… and I must finalise the list of live sessions for the YouTube Club, and the new list of workshops and demos for 2025, and write the info for the funeral sheaf demo we have managed to tuck in to this autumn’s schedule....
Maybe not such a slow time after all.  But today, at least, as I write this it’s as hot and sultry as a day in the south of France, and so I, my friends, am going to give myself the afternoon off.  Feet up in the shade with a good book and the bees humming – that’ll do me.

So have a wonderful August all.  Do remember there are plenty of workshops and demos both here at the farm and online coming up to take us through the autumn so do book yourself a treat, or a learning experience, or even an opportunity to completely change your life.  I’ll see you all soon.
