A totally rewritten and newly photographed edition of 'The Flower Farmer’s Year' has been on the cards almost since the first edition was published in 2014.

I was learning hard and fast in those early flower farming years, the business of growing cut flowers in an artisanal way was becoming enormously popular.  The British flowers movement surged along in madcap fashion.

Then along came COVID which gave us all time to think, to strategise, to see how far we’d come, and how far there is still to go.

My own approach to growing cut flowers for sale streamlined as I learned to be a better businesswoman, to run a business that strongly aligned with my values, to do less better.

All of this led to the entirely re-written book, aimed at those who grow for pleasure, as well as people growing (or thinking about growing) for profit, as well as people who want to run a lifestyle business of any kind - not just flower farming.

In the new book, you can learn to design your cut flower patch, and grow for cutting all kinds of cut flowers and foliage.

From ordering your first packet of seed to choosing tools with which to harvest, the growing cut flowers part of the project is detailed and designed to make you the reader think cleverly from the get-go about what you’d like from your cut flower growing.

The section on running a business growing cut flowers for sale is much expanded.  From the kind of flower farmer you might decide you’d like to be, through the year you might plan to fill with business, to how to create a business plan and run a cash flow forecast, I have streamlined what you need to know before you start a business in order to save you huge amounts of time and possible mistakes once you’ve started.

My job is to inspire and empower you to follow your dream. I would read this book if I were thinking about starting any kind of Lifestyle Business: a business with purpose, that pays a reasonable living, that allows one to step away from the constantly growth style model, and towards a business that sustains a person, a family the environment, the soul. A business with purpose that feels like worthwhile work.

The all new edition of The Flower Farmer’s Year is published by Bloomsbury on 10th September 2026.
