Flower farming workshops coming up this term

As the busy summer season (in the Northern hemisphere) draws to a close, it’s a timely opportunity to reflect on the year, how it’s gone, what went well, the challenges we faced and how we might do things differently next season.

It’s also the time we like to offer our various flower farming workshops and we’ve several coming up in October and November to remind you about. Plus, we’ve snuck in a 2027 date to the list too!

And, of course, Georgie’s new book will be of interest to many of you. More info about The Flower Farmer’s Year here.

If you’re thinking about doing any of these sessions, do consider becoming a paid subscriber on Substack. This gets you a 10% discount on bookings.

Here are the various workshops we offer to experienced and potential flower farmers. Do let us know if you’ve any questions about any of these and we will be really happy to help.

Tuesday 13th October The Flower Farmer’s Year Workshop

Online, available as a recording if you can’t join live

Bring your year planner to this online workshop and let Georgie walk you through the dates that will guarantee you a season full of flowers, year on year.

The single most important tool in Georgie’s flower farming practice is her diary. Without it, crops don’t get in the ground on time, bulbs don’t arrive when the beds are ready, and the season begins to slip before it’s started. In this workshop she shares that diary with you, the precise schedule she follows to ensure she always has flowers, from the first shrubs of the year to the last dahlias of autumn.

From sowing dates and bulb orders to dahlia splitting, bed preparation, and watering schedules, every stage of the growing year has its moment, and this workshop helps you map that onto your own garden or farm. Georgie answers every question, adapts to every situation, and sends you away with a plan you can actually stick to.

Wednesday 14th October The Design A Cut Flower Patch Workshop

Online, available as a recording if you can’t join live

Learn how to plan and plant a productive cut flower patch, from a courtyard filled with pots to a multi-acre growing space, in this practical online workshop with flower farmer Georgie, who has been growing cut flowers for sale in Somerset since 2010.

Georgie began growing on a space not much larger than a good allotment and now farms across four patches covering acres. She knows exactly which varieties matter most, how much space each type of plant needs per square metre, and how to design a flower patch that delivers a generous, varied harvest all season long.

In this workshop she takes you through her own cut flower patches, shares sketched designs to spark your thinking, and answers every question about layout, soil, infrastructure, and planting, so that whatever your space, you leave with a plan you can act on.

Tuesday 16th March The Introduction To Flower Farming Workshop

A day at the farm in Somerset (also available online if you can’t get to Somerset - see above for details)

Join Georgie at her flower farm for a day looking at what it takes to become a person who grows flowers for sale. The day is split into three sessions:

During the first session, we’ll be looking at what kind of flower farmer you might like to be. Georgie helps each student consider why they’d like to move to this new career, and what kind of a flower grower they might become. This group discussion is extremely important as it’s easy to look at flower farming from outside and think that there are only one or two ways to be a flower farmer, when, on the contrary, there is a way of growing flowers for sale to suit every person.

For the second session, we’ll walk around the farm to see how Georgie and Fabrizio grow, harvest, and get to market their cut flower crop. Georgie encourages students to look at how she and Fabrizio work with a very critical eye, seeing where efficiencies could be made, understanding the ethos behind this couple’s business, and so beginning to see how each student could apply what they learn on this day to their own plot, whether they already have it, or are looking for land to grow on.

A break for lunch at our local farm shop, The Kitchen at Kimbers, allows time for some of the information from the morning to be discussed, for the group to get to know each other better, for ideas to begin to settle in peoples’ minds.

The afternoon session looks at pricing, marketing and social media. Georgie always says that growing flowers is the easy part: finding your market and selling them at a price which will mean you have enough profit to make the process worth your while is not always so obvious.

Consultancy with Georgie

Online or at the farm

These are focused, personalised conversations, built around what you need, at the stage you’re at, wherever you are in the world. Your session will include:

  • Pre-questions for you to complete so Georgie can tailor the session to your needs

  • Initial 3 hour session

  • Follow up session of 1.5 hours

Every session starts before you and Georgie even meet. Once you book, we send you a set of pre-session questions designed to get your thinking moving and give Georgie the context she needs to plan something genuinely useful for your situation. Your answers help Georgie understand your priorities and make the most of your time together.

The main session itself is a focused 3 hour conversation. Georgie’s approach is direct and practical. She’ll help you identify what’s working, spot what isn’t, and give you a clear way forward.

The 1.5 hour follow-up session will be booked for several months later so you can review the work you’ve done together and identify further objectives to keep working towards.
